How many people know the value that you have to offer? You may have clearly defined your brand: You know what you stand for, you know your passion, your achievements, unique abilities and experiences. You clearly know the value that you have to offer as a member of a group, as an employee, as a business partner or as an entrepreneur. But does the world beyond your immediate circle know about it?
Defining your brand is not enough, you need to consistently manage it. How?
•Define your goal – who do you want to reach. Who would benefit from what you have to offer, who would add credibility to your brand? It could be a business partner, a recruiting company, clients, a community or group of people with similar interest.
•Network – Attend relevant events and make new connections both online and offline. Offer valuable content in industry publications or company newsletters.
•Create a personal website and/ blog to showcase your expertise – this is especially so for consultants.
•Look the part – this does not mean you looking uptight every day, it means looking appropriate for the brand. A fashion designer and tax consultant do not have to dress the same way but they can both represent their brand by dressing appropriately.
•Make good use of social media – Most employers (87%), clients and business partners use social media (especially LinkedIn for professionals) to validate your brand.
LinkedIn tips;
• Take a professional photo and customize your profile picture
• Use your elevator pitch
• Join relevant groups and discussions
• Post articles about your industry or area on interest.
• Post consistently
• Do not post or comment for the sake of it, add value
• Monitor mentions and tags and respond appropriately and timely
• Mind what you post – you don’t have to be boring but you need to represent your brand well.
To have a successful brand, remember;
1. Clarity – clarify what you stand for, define your unique brand
2. Consistency – Walk your talk, both online and offline. Make it easy for people to clearly say who you are, what you do and what you stand for without you meeting them and explaining it.
3. Constancy – Stay constantly visible to your target audience. In a competitive world a successful brand remains in the face of its audience even as it evolves.
All the best in creating and managing your brand!
